01 / ABOUT THE PLACE

About this place

A dense, silky cheese richness gently embraces local Kyoto ingredients. Situated near the intersection of Takatsuji-dori and Horikawa-dori, Kyouhouseki is a confectionery shop that specializes in cheese terrines seamlessly woven with traditional Japanese flavors.

Depth Born from Yuzu, Saikyo Miso, and the Pleasing Bitterness of Matcha

One of the shop's signatures is the Saga, which lavishly combines seed-grown yuzu from Mizuo, Kyoto, with sweet Saikyo miso. The mellow salinity and umami of the Saikyo miso enfold the palate, while the fragrant citrus aroma and delicate bitterness of the yuzu emerge from underneath, gracefully tightening the rich finish. Meanwhile, the moderately sweet Uji balances the fragrant bitterness of Uji matcha against the body of the cheese. It sits comfortably alongside dark-roast coffee and Japanese tea, yet feels just as natural served with wine or sake.

Assortments for Tastings and Gifts

Inside the shop, visitors will find the Saga and Uji Mix Set alongside selections that evoke Kyoto's terroir, including the Kyohouji, with its roasty aroma, and the Kyotanba, featuring Tanba black soybeans. Each portion is individually packaged so that peeling off the outer film allows it to be plated directly onto a dish, and takeaways are handed to customers frozen. Guests can let it thaw completely to enjoy a melt-in-the-mouth texture with a spoon, or sample it while still slightly chilled to discover their preferred temperature.

The understated packaging makes these terrines an easy choice for gifts or an elevated treat, bringing a lingering richness to quiet dessert hours at home.
